“We help people who may lack financial means, or access to a vehicle or a support driver. They may be experiencing violence in the home or have learning difficulties or other challenges that make getting a driver’s licence difficult,” explains Jonelle.
Drive My Life is a charitable initiative that delivers a driver licensing programme in Murihiku and Whakatipu.
“Around here, there’s not a lot of options for education or employment if you can’t drive. Even getting groceries or taking your kids to the doctor is challenge when you’re so far from the closest town. It’s not uncommon for young people to drive unlicensed out of necessity and they end up racking up fines and ending up in court. We want to stop that from happening,” explains Jonelle.
Jonelle says the Drive My Life program is literally life changing.
“By helping our young people get their driver’s licence we’re empowering them to take the next step, whether that’s getting into education pathways or employment or simply giving them the independence and self- sufficiency to change their personal situation.”
“I’ve seen people crying in the AA because they’re so happy and proud of themselves. It can change their whole outlook on themselves and that’s so incredible,” she adds.
Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation has provided funding to support Drive My Life and Jonelle says this support is crucial to their success. “I’m so grateful to Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation for all their support. I absolutely love what I do. It’s so rewarding to help young people everyday and see how something that many of us take for granted can change their life for the better.”
