VOYCE Whakarongo Mai is an independent charity that helps advocate for around 6000 children with care experience.
“We have the one-on-one support where our advocates connect with young people and work directly with them to make sure that their voices are being heard and that they understand the decisions that are being made about and for them,” says Tupua.
“I wish I’d had that kind of support when I was younger, because children who feel heard, feel empowered and feel encouraged will continue to speak up.”
“Then there is the collective and systemic change, where those with lived experience can advocate at a higher level,” he explains.
In March 2021, Tupua represented the care community at the Government Select Committee Hearing to strongly oppose the proposed Youth Demerits Bill.
Following the hearing, the bill was withdrawn by the National MP, Hon. Mark Mitchell, who had submitted it for consideration.
“It was crazy, being able to sit in front of the Government Select Committee and tell my story. Generations of my whānau have gone from the care system to jail, and this bill would have amplified that. We can’t afford laws like that passing in this country,” recalls Tupua.
Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation has provided funding to VOYCE Whakarongo Mai but Tupua says it’s about more than just funding. “Sometimes it’s the small things that make a difference. Like tickets to a Warriors game. To a kid in state care, that’s never been to a game, it’s the ultimate childhood dream.”
